Call for Participants

Toronto-born, Brooklyn-based artist Erin Clarke is looking for diverse actors, dancers and other performance-inclined folks to work with her on a multi-screen video installation project, Borne, which will be shown in October 2006 as part of a "cross-river live media festival" hosted by Polytechnic University's Integrated Digital Media Institute and Parsons The New School for Design (please visit the IDMI website for more information). A single-channel version will also be created for submission to various festivals and shows.

Participants will choose a location, within a set of guidelines, in NYC and be video recorded jumping, leaping along with other improvised movement. As well, people can choose to contribute vocal improvisation in a recording facility and/or write a short story about a profound experience that dramatically shifted their understanding of themselves and/or the world. People are also needed to help with camera operation, sound and lighting.

Production will take place from late June through July 2006. This is a no-budget endeavour undertaken as part of Erin's Master's thesis; however, nourishment will be provided and all participants who appear in and assist with the work will be credited. Erin will work closely and respectfully with all involved.

If you are intrigued and have a desire to work on this project, please contact Erin Clarke via email: rackle-at-gmail-dot-com or phone: 718 522 2612

Borne Project Guidelines

Location

Ideal locations for shooting will have a minimum of background movement and visual distraction. Participants will appear best when wearing solid coloured clothing that contrasts with the background. The movie samples illustrate this in a park setting. Sites of urban solitude could work well, such as underneath the Manhattan bridge in Brooklyn. Both Indoor and outdoor settings can work, such as a room in a warehouse or a stairwell in a school, according to available access.

Story

Whether a participant chooses to write or speak or simply bear in mind a particular profound event in their lives, this is an optional component of the project. Stories are intended to function as a focal point for each person. They will not be included in the exhibition.

Vocals

Participants are encouraged to engage in recorded vocal improvisation, which will accompany their piece at the 'slow suspended interval' stage. However, this is not a requirement. The artist will supply vocal improvisations for those who do not wish to contribute their own.
